When we ask our friend to sit in front of us, we just hold each other's hands. We can feel the fingers overlapping while we make a tangle of our fingers. When looking at those twenty fingers without moving them, we may indeed notice a difference in size and colour, we may localise our own fingers by recognizing the ring we are wearing, but apart from that, can we say that we are more in some fingers than in others?

Now we concentrate on touch: we close our eyes and just feel the tiny touch sensations where our fingers nudge and slightly overlap the other fingers. Now what is the Witness of these sensations. Who – or rather what – is witnessing these sensations? What is the Subject which ‘sees' the sensations? What is the Subject that witnesses that there is a “you” and a “partner” and the sensations? This Subject is the unobstructed clearness that accommodates those say three different images. It is a kind of pool of awareness in which those sensations float. It is a plasma screen on which these sensations appear. And the idea that you are a separate person and your partner is also a separate person are no more than images appearing and disappearing on that same plasma screen. Where is the distinction between our hands and the hands of our partner? Where is the demarcation between you and your partner? We are both a circle of ripples in the same pool of Awareness. What we usually take for our separate bodies, now surfaces as one single sensation. It is obvious that we can do this experiment using other body parts than our hands and still ‘see' the same one-ness.
